Step #3 - Systems and processes . . .There’s an order to the universe, and it’s this structure that prevents us as human beings from hurtling into entropy. Many years ago before the breakup of the telephone industry’s Bell System, AT&T used what I consider to be an excellent mantra: “The System is the Solution,” Today in business that slogan still rings truer than ever.

Systems and processes are the schematics by which a company operates to keeps things organized. Sure, exceptions occur, and they must be addressed when they happen. However, when exceptions become the rule, then chaos reigns. Systems and processes may be boring, but they keep the operations running smoothly.

Not only do these systems and processes need to be developed and implemented by an organization, they need to be flexible over time so as to adapt to changes. What may work today flawlessly, will eventually clog and collapse when encountering continued incremental volume. Managing infrastructure systems and processes requires looking at the company “chess board” two, three, or even five steps ahead, of course, without overlooking the next move.

The ability to keep the systems and processes effective and crisp will ensure that a business is able to stay ahead of the pace in managing its operations, now and into the future.
