Step #6 - Win with a "team". . .
There’s a story about the legendary college football coach, Lou Holtz, when in 1986 he took over a struggling Notre Dame football program. As an experienced coach, Holtz knew that with an elite football school such as Notre Dame, the problem was not due to a shortage of talented players. What he immediately realized was, under the predecessor coach, the players weren’t being well utilized, and as a result they weren’t operating effectively together (i.e., which translates in football to “not winning”). So, acting as a good manager, he went about to shuffle the lineup and players into what he considered their “right” positions, and where they could best function as a cohesive unit and team. Of course, as they say, “the rest is history”.
That simple lesson can be utilized in the world of business and management, too. It’s good to have the right people, but to truly be successful you need to organize them into an effective team. The key to developing a winning “team” is to:
manage the overall group and strategic direction to stay focused on the goal,
while simultaneously managing the unique personalities and diverse resources within the environment to maintain synergy between all parties.
Like watching a skilled orchestra maestro in action, it’s a matter of continually coordinating the various resources, mindfully knowing when/how to manage the tempo, volume, sections/groups, egos/personalities, motivations, and even the “feel”. Within a business it’s important to look at the individuals involved in your organization, identifying and nurturing their skills and talents, so as to carefully position and manage them AND the business for success.
It’s one thing to simply operate in multi-person environment; it’s a totally different experience to operate as a winning team. And when you do, it’s magic!
