Step #7 - Focus on what you do best. . .
We’re all familiar with William Shatner, the sometimes bombastic personality - legendary Captain Kirk, spokesman for Priceline.com, actor, and even caricature of himself in movies, television, and advertisements. Whether you like him or you don’t, you have to admit that he’s been successful.
What you may not know about William Shatner is that he has a musical career, too. He has released several albums over the years, including his 1996 his collaboration, “Spaced Out – The Very Best of Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner”. With relative assurance, I can assume that no one reading this post has any of his (or their) tracks in his/her iTunes music library.
Although Mr. Shatner may have coyly used his foray into music to somehow promote his visibility and career, it’s readily apparent that his ultimate success in the entertainment industry wasn’t due to his musical efforts. It also serves as a reminder to all of us that we should stick to what do what we do best.
Often times as businesses grow and necessity requires it, the entrepreneur/manager gets pulled away from his/her core competencies (and from what originally made the business and individual successful). And sometimes for that individual, the idea of “giving up control” or not “doing it all” can be threatening and unsettling. The end result is valuable time diverted into frustrating administrative matters (such as bureaucratic paperwork, staffing issues, finance, etc.) . . . and an under-performing business.
To operate in our most effective and successful manner, we need to remember to focus our energies upon what we do best, and to outsource the other functions to those specializing in those areas. Everyone’s talents are different, and what can be difficult and mundane for one person, can be right up another person’s alley. We will find it to be a more enjoyable and satisfying use of our time. And it might also help us "live long and prosper".
